Hey folks. Mine was in a loop also. i tried everything - the menu and minus button reboots, etc. I was letting it loop for a few minutes while I was looking for a fix online and suddenly it stopped the looping and presented a steady menu screen. Now I’m downloading the software update. I’m wondering if this is an issue with the router/network. Anyway, maybe try letting it loop and go make a sandwich.

Attempting to follow Kate’s instructions, but I do not remember what the SSH password is. The reboots keep me from using Nito to change it…
So many posts about SSH’ing into ATV2 and yet no one mentions “alpine”!
I followed Kate’s instruction to SSH and this fixed the rebooting problem, but now my ATV2 will not see the internet. It does see my local area network fine, allowing me to watch movies, etc. that are installed in my iTunes. But, of course, I need internet access.
I have tried both wired and wireless with the same result.
UPDATE: YouTube, Internet Radio, Browser and In Theaters seems to be seeing the internet fine, but no Netflix, Movies, TV Shows or Podcasts (or the iTunes Store checking for Rentals) are available to me.
As is usual when internet is not available, the actual menus of Movies, TV Shows and Netfilx and Podcasts (within Internet) do not appear. I am using iOS 4.4.4.
UPDATE 2: I tried to do a restore from the Settings:General menu. I go to Reset, then Restore, confirm, then I immediately get a message: "Restore - Apple TV can’t download the latest update right now. Try again later.’
I have now tried a few times with the same results.
UPDATE 3: I tried deleting the instruction of Kate’s post per the answer to the question of how to delete and rebooting leads to the original reboot cycling problem, so I reinserted Kate’s SSH intruction. Still no Movies, TV Shows, Netflix, Podcasts or iTunes Store.
After updating your /etc/hosts file try running (From SSH)
apt-get update
apt-get -y upgrade
After that completes (If it does anything at all, if you get an error paste it here) try removing the line I had you add to /etc/hosts.

Does that command instruct the device to attempt to download an Apple iOS update? I thought it was dangerous to alllow an Apple iOS upgrade to a JB’d AppleTV and a restore must be completed first (which my device will not do).
You want me to complete BOTH commands?
Please clarify in more detail what your last sentence suggests.

Run both commands, one after the other. apt-get update ; apt-get upgrade -y
It will update all the packages on your AppleTV, the ‘official’ packages should already be blocked with your /etc/hosts file, so only Cydia, NitoTV and other apps will be updated, not the ENTIRE system.
This should apply any updates that ‘fix’ the issues you’re experiencing.

UPDATE: Would that be fiorix’ advice to run:

UPDATE 2: I ran both of fiorix' commands and now the ATV2 is back to rebooting over and over again.
Due to the GPG keys expiring you need to run apt-get upgrade -yf (Yes and force)
This way it will install the new keychain as well. After that’s done run apt-get update and apt-get upgrade -y again and see if there are any other updates.

MichaelLAX, I don’t know too much about this programming language, but upon searching for your error I find that the command “apt-get -y --force-yes” might help you. It seems to be what the final error messege is telling you.
I think that is why Kate suggested the “f” added to the command. I will try it your way when I get home later and hopefully Kate will be back soon too.

I don’t have my ATV2 plugged in right now so I can’t check the packages myself at this second. Also, after updating everything did you attempt a power cycle of your ATV?

Strangely, I did not get an email notification of your recent post, so I missed it yesterday.
Usually I use the Nito utility to reboot the AppleTV but this morning I pulled out the power plug and restarted that way. Same result (continuous rebooting) when I use these two commands:

Then in Categories create an apps folder, a games folder, and a favorites folder. Put your apps in the folders. DO NOT put the following apps in categories folders: Camera, Weather, Notes, Calculator, Mail, iTunes Store, App Store, Messages, Twitterrific (If you don't have it that is alright but the theme looks better if you have it), Winterboard. I reccomend that you put these in your dock because they are bigger than the other icons and they look better if they are in this order: Safari, iPod, Phone, Settings, Cydia. Thanks to all, but…
I discovered on the Apple Support site that I can tether the AppleTV2 to my Mac and use iTunes to RESTORE. I did and it upgraded it and is now fully functional again.
I got impatient missing my podcasts…
I’ll JB again, when the next untethered JB is available (maybe sooner), but it is now nice to have access to these new apps: HBOGO, ESPN, Sky News and more!
Following where MichaelLAX stopped, is there a way to make my ATV2 back to work properly without going through the whole process that MichealLAX went through?
I did everything that kate66 recommended, yet if I remove that added line from /etc/hosts, my aTV2 will go back to its reboot loop, while with it, I do not have all the icons on the main screen (probably due to that line added to /etc/hosts).
Open for help please.
